Useful Fictions • 1: Taking the Measure École Polytechnique | 09-13.09.2019

1st edition of the “Useful Fictions” summer school: five multidisciplinary labs spread across the Polytechnique campus:

LAB1 | “Climate Measurements” | Atmospheric Remote Sensing Instrumental Research Site (SIRTA), Pierre Simon Laplace Institute (IPSL)
An artistic exploration of climate measurement tools to account for air pollution.

LAB2 | “A Microclimate of One” | Hydrodynamics Laboratory (LadHyX)
Visualization of atmospheric plumes produced by the heat flow and convection of the human body, to raise awareness of our ecological impact.

LAB3 | “4D Additive Manufacturing: from Printing to Animation” | Irradiated Solids Laboratory (LSI)
Animation of biomimetic 3D-printed objects allowing for speculation on the possible short-term applications of 4D printing in relation to environmental changes.

LAB4 | “Data Materia” | Fablab | Drahi Center
Materialization and prototyping of digital data, particularly related to climatology.

LAB5 | “Making, Engagement & Reflexivity”
Ecofeminist workshop questioning scientific methodology and non-academic knowledge, with a performance related to soil analysis on the Polytechnique campus.

18 student artists, scientists, designers, architects, and activists from around the world.

24 French and international research supervisors, professors, and artists to guide their thinking.

In addition to several exhibitions (Drahi Center at l’X, Galerie Hus Paris, and UC Irvine) of prototypes, videos, photos, and installations, a presentation evening is taking place at the Consulate of the American Embassy, featuring a talk by climatologist Valérie Masson-Delmotte and students from the Sustainable Development Association of the École Polytechnique, signatories of the Student Manifesto for an Ecological Awakening.

A partnership between the Universities of California (UC Davis, University of California, Irvine, and UCLA) and the École Polytechnique, organized by the Arts & Sciences Chair and with the support of the Sustainable Development Chair at the École Polytechnique, with five workshops, two of which were designed and led by the École des Arts Décoratifs Paris.
